Cancio Short Bio 2014

 

Born in 1961 in Puerto Rico. In 1984 as soon as Cancio graduated from Boston University, BFA;  he moved to  the Straight of  Gibraltar on the coast of Spain.  There he established  his first professional studio overlooking Morroco for one year. Since then he has lived exclusively from his art.

In 1986 Ponce Art Museum acquired “Ballets Conteporains” at 9’ x 9’ his first large scale work. Cancio was already showing at Galería Andre in San Juan and, moved to San Francisco.  In 1987 he  had a one man show at Instute of Puertorican Culture, his first of many public and private . Next year he had another one man show  at  San Juan Museum of Art and History.  In 1989  Ponce Art Museum  acquired a second piece of his.

In 1991 after having studios in the Virgin Islands and Old San Juan, Cancio took a trip around the world, had a studio in the Portofino Peninsula in Italy then, reestablishes in San Francisco. In 1992 Museum of Religious Anthropology, P.R. acquires one of  his paintings.  After several one man shows in Viota Gallery, PR; in 1998 he is part of the exhibition: “Colección de Arte Puertorriqueño del Museo de Arte de Ponce” .

In 2001 Cancio is part of “ El Arte de Puerto Rico a Traves del Tiempo” at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. In 2004  after  moving back to Puerto Rico he  has a one man show   “In the Seas In the which I have Lived” in Museo de las Casas Reales, Dominican Republic. The Florida Museum of Hispanic Latin American Art acquires “She is on Fire”. In 2005 he shows at “Art International Congesshaus”, Zurich, Switzzerland.

In 2007 Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico takes on a five year loan from a private collector “La Llegada de la Diosa Africana” 9'x 9’. In 2009 Cancio has a one man show at Galería Ginocchio in Mexico City and travels to Shanghai to show at Art Shanghai. Cancio also visits the  Terracotta Soldiers, Xian, China.

In 2010 the Ponce Art Museum acquires a third piece “A Full Moon Night” 6’6” x 11”.  In  2011  Museo    de  Arte  de  Puerto  Rico   acquires   “The Street is on Fire”  8’ x 10’.  Then  Museo de  Arte Contemporaneo, P.R. acquires “Wave” a Painting and Drawing diptych measuring 24’ x 6’6”.

In 2012  Cancio is part of the exhibition; “Afrolatinos” at  Museo de Arte de Caguas,  P.R.  In 2013 goes back to the same little town in  the  Straight of Gibraltar,  buys and restores a 600  year old house to establish a permanent Studio in Europe.

In 2015  Cancio will  have a one man show; “The Temple of the Superior Beings”  at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico.
